Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 RC released to MSDN subscribers

Microsoft said on Monday that it had shipped a Release Candidate (RC) copy of its development software Visual Studio 2010.Visual Studio is a development environment that allows developers to create GUI applications along with Windows Forms applications, web sites, web applications, and web services in both native code together with managed code for all platforms supported by Microsoft Windows, Windows Mobile, Windows CE, .NET Framework, .NET Compact Framework and Microsoft Silverlight.There are no new features in the RC release from beta 2 and Microsoft has focussed on speed improvements. Microsoft launches Windows 7 developer contest
|
|
Microsoft is challenging developers to write an "amazing Windows 7 application" in exchange for a trip to LA for PDC09, and up to $17,777 in cash.
Code7 is a special coding contest for developers. "It is a way for you to cash in on your knowledge and skills" said Yochay Kiriaty, Windows 7 Technical Evangelist, in a Windows Blog team post.

Build an original, consumer-oriented client application prototype that runs natively on Windows 7 (for example Win32, WPF, MFC or WinForms – not an Air application or just a gadget) and addresses one or more of the following topic categories:

Windows 7 RTM - build 7600
|

Wzor is reporting that Windows 7 will RTM at build 7600.
Released to manufacturing follows weeks of rumour and speculation on when Microsoft would unveil that it has finished Windows 7. 7.7600.16384.090710-1945 is the potential final build number and we're still expecting the company to announce the finalisation of Windows 7 at the annual Worldwide Partner Conference providing there are no last minute recompiles. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is due to hold a keynote on Tuesday July 14 so if Windows 7 is ready then this could be a fitting time for the RTM announcement.
Windows 7 has been in beta development since mid to late 2008 and build 7600 will mark the end of the beta phase and on to servicing and then general availability on October 22.

Windows 7 UK pre-orders 'strong'
|

Microsoft began its' limited Windows 7 pre-order offer for UK customers in the early hours this morning.
Microsoft has partnered with several retailers in the UK to offer both Windows 7 Home Premium E (£49.99) and Windows 7 Professional E (£99.99) to early adopters. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to Neowin that early indications show orders have been "strong" despite the fact Windows 7 in the UK comes without Internet Explorer.
Microsoft will only be offering Windows 7 E in Europe, without Internet Explorer. Company officials confirmed that no upgrade versions are available so customers who purchase Windows 7 E using the pre-order offer will get full versions of Windows 7.
